hildren … children, children, children. How many times do we find ourselves ruing the day they arrived without an instruction manual or returns policy. Although we can’t really help with the latter, we CAN (and do) provide some relief with regard to the former.
Our approach to kids here is simple. Make it fun, make it cool, involve them in what’s going on, explain what’s happening and why. It’s seriously misleading to think that the oral and dental health and wellbeing of our kids is not as important as that of their more mature counterparts. It IS. Vitally important.
We are often asked the question “when should I start bringing my child to the dentist?”. Our response is “it’s never too early”. We encourage parents to lay down the foundations of the habit of regular attendance at the dentist from a very early age. In this way visits to the dentist – and, by extension, learning about and becoming involved in oral health and hygiene education – become an important part of the routine of normal life for children.
Should treatment be necessary, we make sure the child understands why they are having this done, explain what we are going to do, how we are going to do it, and what, if any, the after-effects may be. We encourage them to ask questions and use our intra-oral digital camera to show them before and after pictures on the ceiling-mounted overhead screen.
To date the most common problem we’ve encountered is diffusing the arguments over whose turn it is to go first!
